ART procedures in Park Avenue Fertility

Today we would like to share with you an overview of different Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ART):

  • In vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF)
  • Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)
  • Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)
  • Frozen embryo transfer (FET)

IVF (In vitro fertilization) is a procedure that allows for the fertilization to happen outside the woman’s body. Sperm and eggs are combined in a special dish to make embryos (fertilized eggs). After embryos are formed, they are transferred into the woman’s uterus. During ZIFT and TET the embryos are placed in the fallopian tube. In cases where it is impossible to use the fallopian tube, the embryos need to be injected into the uterus.

IUI (intrauterine insemination) involves stimulating the woman’s ovaries for a more active production of eggs and then injecting washed sperm into the uterus. This method is often used when there is insufficient number or weak activity of the sperms, as well as in cases when thick cervical mucus prevents the sperm from travelling to the uterus. IUI is also used for cases of unexplained infertility.

ICSI (Intracytoplasmic sperm injection) involves injecting a single sperm into the egg. An extremely low sperm count is one of the more common indications for the use of this method, when combined with IVF.

FET (Frozen embryo transfer), as the name implies, is the ART technique that uses frozen embryos which were created during a previous fresh IVF cycle. In a FET, thawed embryos are placed in the woman’s uterus. FET is less expensive than other ART options and is often covered by insurance.

IVF is a commonly used treatment and is often used for female patients with fallopian tube problems. Additionally, IVF-ET is more cost-efficient and less invasive, not requiring general anesthesia or laparoscopy.
