In Vitro Fertilization – Is it Right for You?

In vitro fertilization, commonly known as IVF, is a fertility treatment which involves multiple steps.  First, a woman’s ovaries are stimulated with medication to produce multiple eggs.  She is then closely monitored to determine the appropriate time to harvest the eggs.  Once harvested, the eggs are combined with sperm, and they are grown for 5-6 days in a controlled environment that mimics the human body.  The resulting embryo is then transferred into the uterus for implantation, which should result in pregnancy.

IVF is the most successful fertility treatment available today, and since it was first used in 1978, over 8 million babies have been born using IVF.

When do people need IVF?

Infertility is defined as being unable to achieve pregnancy after up to a year of trying without contraceptive. In order to determine if IVF is the right treatment for you, Dr. Levi will work with you and your partner to evaluate the cause of your infertility.  The male partner will undergo a semen analysis, and the female will have her ovaries, fallopian tubes and uterus evaluated.  Depending on the results, IVF may be determined to be the best option for you.

Common issues that may lead to needing in vitro fertilization treatment include endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), ovulation problems, fallopian tube obstruction (natural or surgical), low sperm count, sperm penetration issues, and antibodies that harm sperm or eggs.

Whatever treatment plan Dr. Levi determines is right for you, the Park Avenue Fertility team will be there to support you.  They welcome questions and provide support throughout the process.

What are IVF Success Rates?

IVF success rates can be difficult to interpret, but you can decipher them with a little information about how the data are compiled.  All IVF clinics are encouraged to report their outcomes to the Center for Disease Control (CDC).  This regulatory requirement helps to assure appropriate rate reporting.  Success rates are reported in multiple categories and take into account number of embryos transferred, as well as whether the embryo was transferred in a fresh or frozen cycle.  A good resource to compare IVF success rates is fertilitysuccessrates.com.

By far, the best success rates are achieved in younger women.  The categories for age are: <35, 35-37, 38-40, 41-42, and donor egg.  The number of embryos transferred is also taken into account when determining success rates.  While the success rate can be increased when multiple embryos are transferred back, there a serious risks associated with multiple births, including twins, so transferring multiple embryos must be considered carefully.  Also, a number of insurance companies will only cover a single embryo transfer.
