What challenges can benefit from fertility surgery?
Dr. Levi may recommend surgery when evaluations reveal certain issues in a woman’s reproductive system.
Endometriosis is a condition where tissue that normally lines the inside of the uterus grows outside of the uterus. In some cases, the patient requires surgery for both the diagnosis and treatment of this condition.
Uterine and pelvic abnormalities may need to be treated using surgery. Examples of these abnormalities include ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, endometrial polyps, adhesions (scar tissue) or congenital anomalies of the uterus or vaginal septum.
Fallopian tube damage or disease can prevent sperm from fertilizing the egg. These issues can also keep the fertilized egg from entering the uterus. Fertility surgery can sometimes address these problems.

What are the two types of minimally invasive surgery?
Laparoscopy and hysteroscopy are the two most common types of fertility surgery. These procedures involve a fertility doctor inserting a narrow telescope into the patient. A camera on the telescope transmits images to a screen. This allows the doctor to analyze the woman’s reproductive system. The doctor can also insert specialized tools to treat certain issues.
Hysteroscopy allows the doctor to evaluate and treat issues in the woman’s uterus. During a hysteroscopy, the woman receives IV sedation before the doctor inserts the telescope through the woman’s vagina and cervix. The doctor can then assess and remove uterine polyps or fibroids.
Laparoscopy consists of the woman receiving IV sedation before the doctor passes the telescope through a small incision near the woman’s belly button. This procedure allows a fertility doctor to evaluate and correct issues like fallopian tube blockages, endometriosis, scar tissue and fibroids.
Dr. Levi performs hysteroscopies for patients requiring the removal of fibroids or polyps. Our clinic refers patients requiring a laparoscopy to another fertility specialist for the procedure.
