Onsite Lab

Our onsite lab performs a range of procedures that offers patients many benefits

Patients at our Connecticut fertility center receive the advantages our onsite lab provides. The fertility lab is where our embryologist performs tasks such as egg fertilization during IVF, preparation of sperm for intrauterine insemination (IUI), embryo biopsy for preimplantation genetic testing (PGT), and many other procedures.

Because the laboratory plays such a crucial role in a patient’s journey to parenthood, it’s important that it maintain high standards. Having our lab onsite helps us ensure we meet these high standards and utilize leading-edge technology. The convenient location of our lab also provides patients the benefit of quick-turnaround fertility testing results, and reduces the time needed to complete treatment.

The procedures specialists perform in the fertility lab have a significant impact on a clinic’s success rates. These procedures require the expertise of an embryologist who has extensive training in assisted reproductive technologies.

Fertilizing and incubating eggs for IVF. After retrieval of eggs from a patient or egg donor, the doctor sends the eggs to our onsite lab, where our embryologist fertilizes them with sperm from a male patient or sperm donor. Fertilization occurs in an incubator, as it mimics the conditions of the uterus.

Cryopreserving eggs, sperm and embryos. The fertility laboratory is where eggs, sperm and embryos are flash-frozen using vitrification technology.

Assessing sperm health. After sperm collection, a lab specialist uses a microscope to analyze sperm count, activity, shape and other parameters.

Preparing sperm for IUI. To ready sperm for transfer into the patient’s uterus during IUI, the andrologist washes the sperm to separate it from the seminal fluid.

ICSI, or intracytoplasmic sperm injection. After egg retrieval during an IVF cycle, the embryologist can use a needle, called a micropipette, to inject one sperm into the center of an egg.

Embryo biopsy for PGT, preimplantation genetic testing. The embryology specialist can perform the embryo biopsy required for the two types of PGT: PGT-A, preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy, and PGT-M, preimplantation genetic testing for monogenic/single gene defects.

Our laboratory director has been at the forefront of advances in fertility care

In addition to our Lab Manager/Sr. Embryologist, and andrologist, our lab director, Dr. Tyl H. Taylor, plays an important role in the success of our onsite lab, which has accreditation from the College of American Pathologists. Dr. Taylor received his PhD in genetics from the University of Kent in England and is board certified by the American Associates of Bioanalysis.

Dr. Taylor has more than 15 years of experience in the fertility field and was on the team responsible for developing oocyte vitrification, or the flash freezing of eggs. In cooperation with Reprogenetics, Dr. Taylor also contributed to the first live birth from an embryo screened with next-generation sequencing, or NGS.

Patients at our Connecticut fertility center benefit from the expertise of Dr. Taylor, who helps us maintain an exemplary lab that supports patients in fulfilling the dream of parenthood.
