Uterine Fibroids

Discover the effective treatments that can help women with uterine fibroids

Our Connecticut fertility center helps patients bypass the common fertility challenge of uterine fibroids. These growths in the uterus are muscular tumors that are almost always benign (non-cancerous). However, they can cause issues when a woman is trying to conceive. Fibroids can also cause abdominal pain and heavy periods.

Fibroids are most likely to cause fertility issues when the growths appear in the uterus, where the embryo develops. The fibroids might not affect a woman’s fertility if they’re small and grow within the muscle or on the surface of the uterus.

Andrew Levi MD can help patients who are struggling to conceive determine whether they have fibroids. If they do, our team will help them take the next step towards building a healthy family.

How does Dr. Levi determine whether a woman has abnormal growths in her uterus?

To diagnose fibroids, Dr. Levi at our Connecticut fertility center utilizes a transvaginal ultrasound. The ultrasound allows Dr. Levi to view the inside of the woman’s uterus and confirm whether she has fibroids.

What treatments does Dr. Levi offer to women with uterine fibroids?

Once the doctor evaluates the size and location of the fibroids, he works with the woman to develop an effective treatment plan. Dr. Levi will likely recommend minimally invasive surgery if the growths are significantly affecting a woman’s ability to conceive.

Hysteroscopy. When the fibroids are within the uterine cavity, Dr. Levi will likely recommend a hysteroscopy. During this procedure, he passes a thin, lighted telescope through the vagina and cervix to view the uterus. The doctor can then use a specialized tool to remove the growths in the uterus.

Laparoscopy. Women with smaller benign tumors in the uterine wall or on the outside of the uterus can benefit from laparoscopy. This procedure consists of the doctor passing a thin tube through an incision in the belly button. Dr. Levi then passes a small telescope through the incision to provide a view of the uterus and remove the uterine fibroids.

The team at our Connecticut fertility center can increase a woman’s chance of developing a healthy pregnancy by using these effective treatments. Contact us for more information about uterine fibroids.
