Annual Exams

The importance of keeping up to date on annual exams

At Park Avenue Fertility, Andrew Levi, MD, our Connecticut fertility center fertility specialist, diagnoses and treats common causes of infertility. One reason that patients decide to seek help from Dr. Levi is because of their annual exams. Often, routine well-woman exams can identify potential issues related to female infertility.

Why are annual exams critical to women’s health?

While most women don’t look forward to their annual exams, these appointments are designed to focus on you, your body and your reproductive health. Well-woman exams enable your gynecologist to complete an overall health assessment, as well as screen for breast and cervical cancers. They also enable you to discuss any overarching concerns that you have, including birth control, family planning and lifestyle habits. Dr. Levi also believes that annual exams can uncover potential infertility issues that may warrant additional evaluation in our Connecticut fertility center.

What should you expect with a well-woman exam?

Annual exams are key to preventive care, but they can also shine a light on any potential female fertility concerns. While these appointments may vary slightly based on the situation, well-woman exams will usually have regular components.

  • Overall wellness discussion – To begin, your healthcare team will take your vitals, check your heart and lungs, and order any standard blood work deemed appropriate. The nurse will also review your medical history, gather any updates on medication, and ask about any concerns you haven’t mentioned.
  • Physical exam – During the annual exam, your physician will perform a breast exam to look for any irregularities. Your doctor will also examine your ovaries, vagina, cervix and fallopian tubes to check for any abnormalities, such as cysts, infections or other issues. A pelvic exam and Pap test may also be completed to screen for sexually transmitted illnesses and certain reproductive cancers.
  • Conception and family planning review – At this visit, you and your doctor will also have the chance to discuss your birth control choices and your current goals related to motherhood.
  • Q&A conversation – Your well-woman exam is a great opportunity to ask about any health issues you may be facing, including hormonal changes, managing stress and overall emotional well-being.

Our Connecticut fertility center is committed to supporting our patients as they build or expand their families. We understand the importance of routine well-woman exams and want to remind and encourage patients to prioritize their well-being by scheduling their annual exams.
