Ovarian rejuvenation: Myths vs. facts

Constant advances in fertility care can be complex and dizzying to fully understand. As a trusted provider, patients rely on Park Avenue Fertility and Reproductive Medicine to separate myth from facts. Some of our Connecticut fertility patients have inquired about ovarian rejuvenation, also called ovarian PRP, as a fertility booster. However, this procedure is not widely accepted, nor is it backed by extensive scientific data.
What is ovarian rejuvenation?

Ovarian rejuvenation uses a patient’s blood, which is drawn and spun up to separate plasma from other components. The plasma, rich in platelets known as PRP (platelet-rich plasma), is injected into a woman’s ovaries. On the surface, claims of improved fertility sound good, but when diving deeper, there is not ample evidence to support the use of this treatment.

Evidence and facts power our decision-making

When deciding what options we choose to provide, we are certain our fertility care is grounded in extensive testing and fact-based science. We know how anxious our Connecticut fertility patients are to start or build a family. While we always want to keep hope alive for our patients, we do not want to promote false hope.

Ovarian PRP is investigational, and the limited studies that are available have several recognized shortfalls.

  • No randomized controlled trials have been published, which are considered a “gold standard” for presenting evidence.
  • The limited studies that do exist differ considerably in design and patient population.
  • There is no consistent method of preparing or administering PRP in ovarian rejuvenation studies.
  • There is no clear indication of what day in the menstrual cycle PRP was administered, and the reason for selecting a given day is unclear.
  • The optimal timing of the start date of fertility treatments after using ovarian PRP is not established.
  • It’s unclear how long the results of PRP treatment last.

We want treatments with a track record, so we do not recommend ovarian PRP

When offering Connecticut fertility patients treatment options, we are not just taking care of them physically. Their emotional needs come front and center. It’s vital we have a high degree of confidence that there is consensus a treatment is well established and backed with scientific evidence. In some cases, such as ovarian rejuvenation, the data just isn’t there, which is why we do not offer ovarian PRP.
