Recurrent Pregnancy Loss Testing

Recurrent pregnant loss testing is recommended after a woman has experienced two consecutive first trimester losses.

There are many causes for recurrent pregnancy loss, including anatomic problems of the uterus, hormonal abnormalities, genetic and chromosomal disorders, autoimmunity, infection, and blood clotting issues. Many of these issues are treatable, and once resolved, can allow for a normal term pregnancy.

An evaluation for recurrent miscarriage involves anatomic testing of the uterus (usually by sonohysterogram and/or hysteroscopy), blood testing, and a biopsy of the uterine lining. Both the male and female partners should also undergo chromosomal testing (a blood test) as well. Following a complete evaluation, patients meet with Dr. Levi to review their test results and to discuss all possible treatment options.

For some couples with unexplained recurrent miscarriage or a chromosomal cause for pregnancy loss, in vitro fertilization (IVF) with preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) may be indicated to best help a couple achieve a successful pregnancy.
