Getting Pregnant in Your 20s

Infertility and getting pregnant in your 20s

Most women in their 20s are considered to be at peak fertility, but for some young women, having a baby is not quick and easy. Infertility in your 20s is defined as the inability to get pregnant after 12 months of regular, unprotected sex. Thankfully, our Connecticut fertility doctor, Andrew Levi, MD, is here for you if you are struggling to conceive and need help getting pregnant in your 20s.

What can cause infertility in your 20s?

For women ages 35 and up, infertility is often related to a gradual decline in the quantity and quality of eggs, which is a natural result of the aging process. Infertility in your 20s is likely to have a different cause.

If you struggle with getting pregnant in your 20s, there are a number of factors that could be at play.

  • Polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS, a common condition that interferes with ovulation
  • Problems with sperm quantity or quality
  • Endometriosis, which can cause scarring from uterine tissue that grows in the wrong places
  • Blocked fallopian tubes, which prevent sperm from meeting the egg
  • Uterine abnormalities, such as fibroids, polyps or an abnormally shaped uterus
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease or sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
  • Cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy or radiation, which can damage eggs and sperm
  • Medical conditions, such as diabetes, blood clotting issues or thyroid problems
  • Genetic issues that can lead to miscarriage or embryos that don’t develop normally

To determine the cause of infertility in your 20s, Dr. Levi will order comprehensive fertility testing for both partners, including a semen analysis for the male partner and bloodwork and imaging studies for you. By determining what’s causing problems with getting pregnant in your 20s, Dr. Levi can prescribe the most effective treatment to help you conceive.

The good news is that with the right treatment, women in their 20s have a high chance of having a successful pregnancy. Certain structural abnormalities or uterine issues can be corrected with surgery. Problems with low sperm count, blocked fallopian tubes or lack of ovulation can be overcome with advanced assisted reproductive technology, such as intrauterine insemination or IVF. If challenges with genetic disorders or a low egg supply are the issue, IVF with donor eggs can make motherhood possible.

Dr. Levi will target your treatment plan to your specific situation and diagnosis, helping you achieve pregnancy as quickly and cost-effectively as possible.
