Anti-mullerian hormone (AMH) is a hormone produced by the cells that surround a woman’s eggs. AMH blood levels are thought to reflect the size of the remaining egg supply ("the ovarian reserve"). As we tell our patients – “lots of eggs, lots of AMH; not as many eggs, not as much AMH”. Unlike other ovarian reserve tests, AMH testing can be performed on any day of a woman's menstrual cycle. It can even be performed if a woman is taking birth control pills.
AMH levels do not necessarily predict egg quality – levels are more a predictor of egg quantity. With increasing age, however, egg quality and quantity often go hand in hand, so lower AMH levels may be more meaningful among women over 35 years old.
With regard to fertility treatment, women with higher AMH values will tend to have better response to fertility drugs (ovarian stimulation). Among patients undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF), women with favorable AMH levels tend to have more eggs retrieved. Often, having more eggs with IVF yields a higher success rate.
At Park Avenue Fertility, we are very careful how we interpret AMH levels and how we use AMH levels to suggest appropriate treatments. Perhaps most importantly – AMH levels do not absolutely predict pregnancy. A woman with a low AMH level may have fewer eggs but they may be of high quality (unfortunately, there is no test than can predict egg quality). AMH levels are, however, used together with other testing to formulate a treatment plan. Moreover, a patient’s age and reproductive history are also very important when interpreting AMH levels.
