Understanding IVF Success Rates

Dr. Levi and the Park Avenue Fertility team want you to understand exactly what success rates for IVF are, what they mean, and how they are determined.

What is an IVF success rate?

A clinic’s in vitro fertilization (IVF) success rate is the number of births reported divided by the number of IVF procedures performed.  This ratio is the overall success rate.  Multiple births (e.g. twins or triplets) are counted as one birth.

IVF success rates are separated into different age groups, whether or not donor eggs were used, and whether it was a fresh or frozen transfer.  On average, for women who choose to use their own eggs, younger women experience higher success rates than older women.  When, however, donor eggs are used, IVF success rates remain stable throughout the different age groups.  The age groups are as follows: under 35, 35-37, 38-40, 41-42, and Donor.

How are success rates reported?

Clinics submit their pregnancy data to Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART) and/or the Centers for Disease Control annually.  Success rates are reported annually based on those data.

What do IVF success rates mean?

Now that you understand what IVF success rates are and how they are calculated, let’s talk about what they really mean. IVF success rates give you an indication of the success of a clinic—the higher the success rate, the more successful a clinic is at in vitro fertilization. IVF success rates cannot predict your individual success rate because every couple has a unique medical history and different factors contributing to their infertility.

Not every clinic has equal success rates

IVF rates vary from clinic to clinic, depending on the technology they employ and how closely the team works with patients. As we mentioned before, it’s important to do your research to find a highly qualified team that individualizes care.

Do your research by reading online reviews, taking a look at the doctor’s credentials, years of experience, and how their individual success rates compare to the national average.

In our case, Park Avenue Fertility is nationally ranked for high success rates. We are currently the #2 fertility clinic in the US, and #1 in Connecticut, when it comes to using IVF for women under 35 with fresh embryos. Our success rate is 73.3%, while the average for this age group and modality is about 45%.  These excellent success rates have been achieved through Dr. Levi’s passion for working one-on-one with patients, having state-of-the-art technology in the office, and having a solid support system in place for all of his patients.
