Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection, ICSI

ICSI provides a path to bypass male factor infertility

When couples face challenges due to male factor infertility, ICSI, or intracytoplasmic sperm injection, provides hope and a targeted pathway to pregnancy. This treatment directs a single live sperm into the center of a mature egg to successfully overcome fertility issues, such as low sperm quantity or poor sperm quality. Park Avenue Fertility and Reproductive Medicine has successfully used this treatment for many couples undergoing IVF in Connecticut.

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection makes fatherhood a reality

ICSI is a difference-maker in male factor infertility. When sperm issues are present, this process can bypass fertility obstacles.

During an IVF cycle, fertilization occurs in the lab after a woman’s ovaries have been stimulated and the eggs are retrieved. In conventional IVF, 50,000 or more swimming sperm surround a woman’s eggs in a laboratory dish. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection is more specialized. The process relies on an embryologist selecting a single sperm with the best potential for fertilization.

This fertility treatment involves several steps for couples undergoing IVF in Connecticut.

  • An andrologist will wash the sperm in a special solution.
  • Sperm is prepared by spinning the live cells through a special medium to separate it from other semen components.
  • An embryologist carefully picks up a single live sperm in a glass needle (micropipette), which is injected into the center of a mature egg. This process is repeated for each egg retrieved.
  • The eggs are closely monitored for signs of successful fertilization.

ICSI can overcome male infertility

As our sole physician, Dr. Andrew Levi fully understands each patient’s situation before suggesting intracytoplasmic sperm injection as a treatment option. He may recommend ICSI for male infertility and certain other fertility challenges.

  • Men with sperm issues, including a low sperm count, lessened movement, abnormally shaped sperm, the presence of anti-sperm antibodies, or blockages that prevent ejaculation
  • Patients with unexplained infertility
  • Couples who have had repeated IVF failures
  • Couples undergoing IVF with low egg retrieval numbers
  • Intended parents using preimplantation genetic testing (PGT), to ensure their embryo biopsy is not contaminated by additional sperm in the sample
